Maria Ortynska at Venture Café: AI in Modern Warfare & Business Ethics

Maria Ortynska, the founder of the patent law firm IPSTYLE (Ukraine) and Ortynska Law (USA), spoke at a Venture Café session – a community of entrepreneurs, investors, and startups – sharing her insights on the intersection of AI, defense technology, and business ethics in "AI in Modern Warfare & Business Ethics".

Here are a few key points that technology developers should pay attention to: "At first glance, AI in defense technology might seem unrelated to copyright issues. Unlike AI applications in music, video, and publishing, where copyright concerns are widely debated, warfare AI doesn’t immediately raise red flags. In reality, AI models used in warfare are often trained on copyrighted materials, such as specific datasets, images. Just like in creative industries, using such data requires permission from copyright owners."

IP attorney also paid special attention to data and liability. When large volumes of images, videos, and other data are used for training AI in defense applications, disclaimers become crucial.

"If your data is accessible for AI training, consider limiting liability and clarifying non-association with potential risks and outcomes. NASA is a great example of doing this," advised Maria Ortynska.
