Despite the ongoing challenges of wartime, Ukraine’s IP landscape shows signs of resilience and continues to evolve. It's driven by new applications for inventions, utility models, designs, and trademarks.
Anastasiia Pavlyk, our IP lawyer at the IPSTYLE team, highlights the key indicators, statistics, and trends in her overview for Lexology, showcasing both the growing innovation within the country and sustained international interest in the Ukrainian market by the end of 2024. Here are some of the main ones:
During the last year, the Ukrainian IP Office received 31,187 applications for intellectual property objects. In particular, 2,559 applications for inventions, 3,748 for utility models, and 1,059 for designs. 23,817 trademark applications were filed under the national procedure.
Over 62% of applications for inventions were filed by foreign applicants. The largest number of invention applications from foreign applicants originated from the USA – 28.5%, the United Kingdom – 9.7% and Germany – 9%. Other active filing countries included Luxembourg, France, China, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Belgium, Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Denmark.
While foreign apply for inventions mostly under the international PCT (Patent Cooperation Treaty) procedure, national (Ukrainian) applicants – under the national one.
At the same time, there is a rise in filings for utility models in Ukraine. Filing for utility models increased by 7% in 2024 by 7% vs. the previous year.
As for trademarks, Ukrainians filed 20,974 applications for registration under the national procedure. Foreign applicants filed 2,843 applications, marking a 3.3% increase compared to 2023. The USA, Switzerland, Cyprus, and China do the largest number of trademark applications filed under the national procedure by foreign applicants.
The most popular Nice Classification classes with the highest number of applications filed under the national procedure in 2024 include:
- Class 35 – Advertising; business management, organization, and administration; office work.
- Class 41 – Education; training services; entertainment; organization of sports and cultural events.
- Class 05 – Pharmaceutical, medical, and veterinary preparations; hygienic products for medical use; dietary food products and substances for medical or veterinary purposes; baby food products, etc.
