IPStyle once again co-hosted the largest intellectual property competition – UBA Students’ League Moot on Intellectual Property 5.0. This year the event was held online for the second time. However, this did not make the competition any less interesting!

“Once upon a time, there were two friends, Ivan and Nadiya. From 2016 to 2018, they lived in neighboring houses and over walks with Ivan’s dog and Nadiya’s cat, they chatted about everything in the world. But their favorite topic of conversation has always been company logos and brands, so the friends were eager to share ideas … “

No, this is not the beginning of a novel. This is the beginning of the 5th Anniversary Intellectual Property Moot court Problem!

IPStyle once again co-hosted the largest intellectual property competition – UBA Students’ League Moot on Intellectual Property 5.0. This year the event was held online for the second time. However, this did not make the competition any less interesting!

Moot Court is a simulation of a court session, in which participants prepare in advance written papers – memoranda – on behalf of both parties: the plaintiff and the defendant, and then present their positions during the oral rounds. During the two days of competition law students have the opportunity to get acquainted with their future profession, get feedback from the leading experts in the field of IP in Ukraine, as well as determine what skills and knowledge they need to strengthen.

The 5th IP Law Moot Court started in March and consisted of two parts – written and oral. First, participants were given a fictional case study. It dealt with trademarks, designs, copyright, innovation and … love! You can read the problem at the link. The students then prepared written memoranda, which were evaluated by the judges.

On April 24, 2021, the real battle began! The participants who received the highest scores from the judges among dozens of other participants made it to the oral rounds. On the battlefield on Zoom, 10 teams of law students met and skillfully operated the norms of international and national law, case law, prepared reasoned speeches and quickly responded to the remarks of opponents. The participants showed persistence, perseverance and charisma.

According to the results of the oral competition, the following teams got prizes:

1st place – Ladies in Law (Odessa I. I. Mechnikov National University)

2nd place – Bez riznytsi (No Difference) (Ivan Franko National University of Lviv)

3rd place – OY Partners (Lviv Polytechnic National University)

The winner of the English-speaking competition was the Politech Gang (Lviv Polytechnic National University). And Taras Yanyshivskyi, a member of the Politech Gang team, was named the best speaker.

The judges of the competition – 27 professionals in the field of intellectual property – with their questions and remarks encouraged participants to find new clues in the case and look at it from a different angle.

We are grateful to the co-organizers of the UBA Students’ League for the incredible work, as well as the public organization “Intellectual Property Club”, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, and the Scientifiс Research Institute of Intellectual Property.

Participants and judges received an incredible charge of energy! In addition, participants gained valuable experience that will help in their careers as lawyers and established themselves among the best lawyers of intellectual property in Ukraine (our judges).

We wish the winners success, challenges, and faith in themselves! We hope to see you soon in the IP arena of Ukraine, and maybe other countries! And we’ll be even more inspired to prepare for the sixth IP Law Moot Court! We believe we’ll meet offline in 2022!
